A short history of the "Shooting Bum" T-shirt:
This is a scanned image of the back of a second generation "Shooting Bum" t-shirt.
This model was sold by the International Shooter Development Fund (ISDF)
in the late 1980's to raise funds to support the programs of the U.S.
Shooting Team.
The first generation "Shooting Bum" t-shirt had "© 1981" and later "© RPC" instead of the "© R.P. Carter". The shirt would have a tag from "Coming Attractions".
Ray P. Carter, a member of the U.S. Shooting Team in the 1970's and 1980's, developed the idea for the "Shooting Bum"
t-shirt in 1981 while driving from Johnson City, Tennessee to Fort Benning, Georgia for the annual Champion of Champions Rifle Tournament and the Interservice
International Rifle Championships. He had it typeset and some printed by a company in Virginia called Coming Attractions. Ray took them to the Championships of the Americas
in Rio de Janiero that Fall and later sold them around the world at various competitions. When he started working for the ISDF
in January 1984 he allowed them to print and market them.
Another U.S. Shooting Team member, David J. Johnson, eventually took over running the merchandise program of the ISDF
and produced a somewhat different version of the t-shirt that was sold in the 1990's by the ISDF, which changed its name
in 1992 to the U.S. Shooting Team Foundation. In 1997 USA Shooting, Inc. took over the merchandise program.
A scanned image of the back of the third generation "Shooting Bum" t-shirt shows how it looks. David was a firm believer
that you needed some color graphics to spice up the images.
