U.S. Olympic Shotgun Team Selection Procedures for 2012 Now Available COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.. (July 31, 2009) ![]() USA Shooting and the U.S. Olympic Committee have approved the selection of the 2012 Olympic Shotgun Team. The official document outlines the details of the selection process, which began with the 2009 USA Shooting National Championships and includes opportunities for athletes to earn points in international competitions in 2010 and 2011. Bill Roy, USA Shooting’s Director of Operations, emphasized the procedure’s focus on selecting the country’s most capable athletes. “This process allows qualified athletes to win opportunities to compete at World Cups and the World Championships, where their performance can earn points toward a ‘threshold’ to gain a nomination to the Olympic Team,” he said. “Those competitors will have shot their way onto the team against the world’s best shooters.” The selection process includes four “Entry Gates” through which athletes may become eligible to compete at the World Cups and World Championships. Those entry gates are based on aggregate scores in various selection matches in 2010 and 2011. If no athlete meets or exceeds the point threshold by the end of the 2011 World Cup season (including the 2011 World Shotgun Championships), the selection procedure includes a provision for athletes to earn an Olympic Team nomination in competition at two selection matches—the 2011 Fall Selection match and the 2012 Spring Selection match. The new selection process evolved through countless discussions with athletes, USOC Sport Partnership representatives, former Olympic shooters, and coaches around the country, including the National Rifle Coach and National Pistol Coach, who successfully instituted a point system for the 2008 Olympic Rifle and Pistol athletes. Roy praised the procedure’s thorough but straightforward nature. “This process is as simple and as fair as we can make it. It’s based on shooting performance on the field, and is designed to place the best competitors on the Olympic Team,” he said. “By the end of the selection process, we’ll all be able to look at the Team members and say ‘of course, those are our best shooters!’” Click here for the official U.S. Olympic Shotgun Team Selection Procedures for 2012
