Rifle & Pistol U.S. Olympic Team Selection Procedures for 2012 Now Available COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 21, 2009) ![]() Please note that these selection procedures are pending final approval by the USOC Board of Directors. The selection of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for Rifle & Pistol outlines the details of the selection process, which will begin with the 2009 Fall Regional and includes opportunities for athletes to earn points in international competitions in 2010 and 2011. The selection process includes several “Entry Gates” through which athletes may become eligible to compete at the World Cups and World Championships. Those entry gates are based on aggregate scores in various selection matches in 2010 and 2011. If no athlete meets or exceeds the point threshold by the end of the 2011 World Cup season, the selection procedure includes a provision for athletes to earn an U.S. Olympic Team nomination in competition at two selection matches—the 2011 Fall Regional match and the 2012 Spring Selection match. The new selection process evolved through countless discussions with athletes, USOC Sport Partnership representatives, former Olympic shooters and coaches around the country, including the National Rifle Coach and National Pistol Coach, who successfully instituted a point system for the 2008 Olympic Rifle and Pistol athletes.
